Note

Have an additional technician hold the special tool EN-956-1 Extension in place while breaking loose the automatic transmission flex plate bolts.

2. Install the EN-49979 Holder (1) with EN-956-1 Extension (3).

3. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (2) » Remove and DISCARD [8x]
4. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate (1) » Remove Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Conditional

Note

The following cleaning and inspection and/or overhaul steps are ONLY to be performed as determined necessary based on the condition of the part being removed with the intention of reinstallation. The labor time to perform any of these steps is not included in the base labor time and if required would need to be documented and submitted as Other Labor Hours for warranty claim reimbursement. A description of the repairs performed must be documented in the technician correction comments.

1. Clean the flex plate in solvent.

Warning

Refer to Safety Glasses Warning.

2. Dry the flex plate with compressed air.

3. Inspect the flex plate for the following conditions: 3.1. Stress cracks around the flex plate-to-torque converter mounting bolt hole locations (1) and flex plate-to-crankshaft (2, 4)

Note

Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the flex plate. Install a NEW flex plate. 3.2. Cracks at welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the flex plate (3) 3.3. Damaged or missing ring gear teeth (5) Installation Procedure

1. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate (1) » Install
2. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps: 2.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth. 2.2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 2.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 2.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.
3. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (2) » Install NEW and hand tighten [8x]

Note

Have an additional technician hold the special tool EN-956-1 Extension in place while breaking loose the automatic transmission flex plate bolts.

4. Hold the EN-49979 Holder (1) with EN-956-1 Extension (3).

Caution

This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.

5. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt » Tighten in sequence [8x] — Fastener Specifications

Note

Have an additional technician hold the special tool EN-956-1 Extension in place while breaking loose the automatic transmission flex plate bolts.

6. Remove the EN-49979 Holder (1) with EN-956-1 Extension (3).
