Radiator Surge Tank Cap Testing

Warning

To avoid being burned, do not remove the radiator cap or surge tank cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system will release scalding fluid and steam under pressure if radiator cap or surge tank cap is removed while the engine and radiator are still hot.

1. Remove the radiator surge tank cap.
2. Clean the radiator surge tank cap sealing surface with water.

Note

Lubricate the radiator surge tank cap o-rings and the o-ring on GE-42401-A Radiator Cap and Surge Tank Test Adapter (2) with coolant before assembly.

3. Attach the radiator surge tank cap (3) to GE-42401-A Radiator Cap and Surge Tank Test Adapter (2).
4. Attach EN-24460-A Cooling System Pressure Tester (1) to GE-42401-A Radiator Cap and Surge Tank Test Adapter (2).
5. Test the radiator surge tank cap (3) for the following conditions: Pressure releases when the radiator surge tank cap exceeds the pressure rating on the radiator surge tank cap. Radiator surge tank cap will maintain the rated pressure for at least 10 seconds.
6. Replace the radiator surge tank cap under the following conditions: The radiator surge tank cap does not release pressure when pressure is exceeded. The radiator surge tank cap does not hold the rated pressure.
