Component Description
B13 Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor The temperature sensor is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor, a resistor which changes based on temperature. Low temperature produces a high resistance: 46 kΩ @ −40°C (−40°F) High temperature produces a low resistance: 60 Ω @ 150°C (302°F)
K71 Transmission Control Module The control module contains a microprocessor used to process input data to control outputs. The control module receives information from a variety of sensors, switches and serial data information from other control modules. This information is used to control a combination of solenoid valves to obtain the correct line pressure, gear ratio and torque converter clutch operation.

The sensor is an input to the control module K71.   1. Ignition » On / Vehicle » In Service Mode
  2. Verify the scan tool parameter: Transmission Fluid Temperature = −39 to 149°C (−38 to 300°F) ⇒ If not between −39 and 149°C (−38 and 300°F) Refer to: Circuit/System Testing ⇓ If between −39 and 149°C (−38 and 300°F)
  3. Verify DTC P0711 is not set. ⇒ If the DTC is set 3.1. Verify the condition does not exist: Incorrect fluid level or condition » Refer to: Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check ⇒ If a condition exists » Repair or replace as necessary ⇓ If no condition exists 3.2. Operate the cold vehicle above 64 km/h (40 MPH) for 10 min. Verify the scan tool parameter: Transmission Fluid Temperature = Temperature increases greater than 15°C (27°F) ⇒ If the temperature does not increase 15°C (27°F) or greater » Refer to: Circuit/System Testing ⇓ If the temperature increases greater than 15°C (27°F) 3.3. All OK. ⇓ If the DTC is not set
  4. Verify the scan tool parameter: Transmission Fluid Temperature = The value should not spike or drop out. Perform the action while monitoring the parameter: Wiggle the harness and connector: X1 @ T12 Automatic Transmission Wiggle the harness and connector: K71 Transmission Control Module ⇒ If the value spikes or drops out Repair as necessary » Wiring / Terminal(s) / Electrical Connector(s) ⇓ If the value does not spike or drop out
  5. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data. Verify the DTC does not set. ⇒ If the DTC sets Refer to: Circuit/System Testing ⇓ If the DTC is not set
  6. All OK. Circuit/System Testing
  1. Ignition/Vehicle & All vehicle systems » Off
  1. Disconnect the electrical connector: X1 @ T12 Automatic Transmission
  1. Test for less than 10 Ω between the test points: Low Reference circuit terminal 26 & Ground ⇒ If 10 Ω or greater 3.1. Disconnect the electrical connector: K71 Transmission Control Module 3.2. Test for less than 2 Ω between the test points: Low Reference circuit terminal 26 @ Component harness & The other end of the circuit @ Control module harness ⇒ If 2 Ω or greater » Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit. ⇒ If less than 2 Ω » Replace the component: K71 Transmission Control Module ⇓ If less than 10 Ω
  2. Ignition » On / Vehicle » In Service Mode
  3. Verify the scan tool parameter: Transmission Fluid Temperature = Colder than −39°C (−38°F) ⇒ If −39°C (−38°F) or warmer 5.1. Ignition/Vehicle » Off 5.2. Disconnect the electrical connector: K71 Transmission Control Module 5.3. Test for infinite resistance between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 13 @ Component harness & Ground ⇒ If less than infinite resistance » Repair the short to ground on the circuit. ⇒ If infinite resistance » Replace the component: K71 Transmission Control Module ⇓ If colder than −39°C (−38°F)
  4. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 13 & Low Reference circuit terminal 26
  5. Verify the scan tool parameter: Transmission Fluid Temperature = Warmer than 149°C (300°F) ⇒ If 149°C (300°F) or colder 7.1. Ignition/Vehicle » Off & Remove » Jumper wire(s) 7.2. Disconnect the electrical connector: K71 Transmission Control Module 7.3. Ignition » On / Vehicle » In Service Mode 7.4. Test for less than 1 V between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 13 @ Component harness & Ground ⇒ If 1 V or greater » Repair the short to voltage on the circuit. ⇓ If less than 1 V 7.5. Ignition/Vehicle » Off 7.6. Test for less than 2 Ω between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 13 @ Component harness & The other end of the circuit @ Control module harness ⇒ If 2 Ω or greater » Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit. ⇒ If less than 2 Ω » Replace the component: K71 Transmission Control Module ⇓ If warmer than 149°C (300°F)
  6. Ignition/Vehicle » Off
  7. Connect the electrical connector: X1 @ T12 Automatic Transmission
  8. Remove the component: Automatic Transmission Fluid Pan
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector: X176
  10. Ignition » On / Vehicle » In Service Mode
  1. Test for 4.8 to 5.2 V between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 14 & Low Reference terminal 13 ⇒ If not between 4.8 and 5.2 V Replace the appropriate component: Automatic Transmission Wiring Harness ⇓ If between 4.8 and 5.2 V
  2. Remove the component: Control Valve Assembly
  3. Connect the electrical connector: X176
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector: B13 Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor
  5. Test for 4.8 to 5.2 V between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 2 & Low Reference circuit terminal 1 ⇒ If not between 4.8 and 5.2 V Replace the appropriate component: Automatic Transmission Wiring Harness ⇓ If between 4.8 and 5.2 V
  6. Test or replace the component: B13 Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Component Testing
  7. Ignition/Vehicle » Off
  8. Remove the component: Automatic Transmission Fluid Pan
  9. Remove the component: Control Valve Assembly
  10. Disconnect the electrical connector: B13 Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor
  11. Test for 20 to 200,000 Ω between the test points: Signal terminal 2 & Low Reference terminal 1 ⇒ If not between 20 and 200,000 Ω Replace the component: B13 Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor ⇓ If between 20 and 200,000 Ω
  12. Verify the value is within the range listed in the table: Temperature Versus Resistance - B13 Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor ⇒ If not in the specified range Replace the component: B13 Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor ⇓ If in the specified range
  13. All OK.
