Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static L84, L87)
Special Tool GE-26568 Coolant and Battery Fluid Tester Equivalent regional tools: Special Tools Draining Procedure
- Remove the radiator surge tank cap.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
- Attach a rubber hose to the radiator drain port to guide the coolant into the drain pan.
- Place a drain pan under the drain cock.
- Rotate the radiator drain cock counterclockwise to open.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Rotate the radiator drain cock clockwise to close.
- Disconnect the rubber hose.
- Remove the drain pan.
- Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
- Inspect the coolant.
- If the coolant is discolored, perform the flushing procedure. Flushing
- Prepare a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL antifreeze and clean, drinkable water in a quantity that equals the maximum capacity of the cooling system. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers Approximate Fluid Capacities
- Using the GE-26568 Coolant and Battery Tester inspect the concentration of the engine coolant.
- Slowly fill the cooling system with the coolant mixture.
- Radiator Surge Tank Cap » Install
- Start the engine.
- Run the engine at 2,000-2,500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Engine should reach an operating temperature of 86°C (187°F).
- Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.
- Turn the engine OFF.
- Allow the engine to cool.
- Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
- Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the engine compartment. Filling Procedure
