Caution

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage many solid-state electrical components. ESD susceptible components may or may not be labeled with the ESD symbol. Handle all electrical components carefully. Use the following precautions in order to avoid ESD damage: Touch a metal ground point in order to remove your body’s static charge before servicing any electronic component; especially after sliding across the vehicle seat. Do not touch exposed terminals. Terminals may connect to circuits susceptible the ESD damage. Do not allow tools to contact exposed terminals when servicing connectors. Do not remove components from their protective packaging until required to do so. Avoid the following actions unless required by the diagnostic procedure: – Jumpering or grounding of the components or connectors. – Connecting test equipment probes to components or connectors. Connect the ground lead first when using test probes. Ground the protective packaging of any component before opening. Do not rest solid- state components on metal workbenches, or on top of TVs, radios, or other electrical devices.

Caution

During removal and installation, all EPS components including mechanical and/or electrical is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping or prying on any EPS component may cause internal damage. If damage occurs or a part is dropped, the EPS component must be replaced.

Caution

Care must be taken during removal and installation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) components to not hit or break the EPS motor/controller module or module harness connectors. If the EPS motor/ controller module or module connectors are damaged, the complete component must be replaced.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

Caution

With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components: The steering column The intermediate shaft(s) The steering gear After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil’s centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

2. Secure the steering wheel so it will not turn when the upper intermediate steering shaft and steering column are disconnected.

5. Front Bumper Fascia Skid Plate Bolt (1) » Remove [4x]
6. Underbody Skid Shield Bolt (2) » Remove [4x]

7. Underbody Splash Shield (1) » Remove

Note

The proper position of the underbody skid shield is between the underbody splash shield and the front frame.

10. Front Lower Control Arm Bracket Bolt (1) » Remove [4x]

12. Remove the left and right steering linkage outer tie rod nuts (1).

Caution

Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal damage may result which will cause premature failure of the joint.

13. Using CH-43631 Ball Joint Separator (1), remove the left and right steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckle.

14. Separate the left and right steering linkage outer tie rods (1) from the left and right steering knuckles.

17. Remove the chassis main wiring harness (1) from the 2 retaining clips (2) and reposition.

18. Remove the power steering wiring harness extension harness (1) from the front suspension crossmember.
19. Disconnect the power steering wiring harness extension harness (1) from the chassis main wiring harness (2).

20. Remove the power steering assist motor wire clip (3).
21. Remove the power steering control module wiring power harness (1) from the 2 retaining clips  (2) and reposition.

22. Disconnect the power steering control module wiring power harness (2) from the main power steering wiring harness (1).

23. Support the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear with a suitable jack.

27. Reposition jack as necessary to remove the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear  (1).

29. Use suitable jack to aid in installation of the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear (1).

5. Steering Gear Bolt - Lower (1) » Tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

6. Steering Gear Bolt - Upper (1) » Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

7. Remove the jack.

8. Connect the power steering control module wiring power harness (2) to the main power steering wiring harness (1).

9. Install the power steering assist motor wire clip (3).

10. Position the power steering control module wiring power harness (1) into the 2 retaining clips  (2).

11. Connect the power steering wiring harness extension harness (1) to the chassis main wiring harness (2).

12. Install the power steering wiring harness extension harness (1) to the front suspension crossmember.

13. Position the chassis main wiring harness (1) into the 2 retaining clips (2).

15. If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps: 15.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth. 15.2. Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 15.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 15.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

16. Intermediate Steering Shaft Lower Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

Caution

Ensure the Outer Tie Rod Boot is not twisted or deformed during assembly. If the boot is twisted or deformed, damage to the boot will occur.

17. If reusing the steering linkage outer tie rod (1), add a small amount of grease on the lip of the rubber boot seal to prevent twisting or deforming of the boot. Do NOT apply grease to the ball joint stud. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
18. Install left and right steering linkage outer tie rods (1) at the left and right steering knuckles.

19. Install and tighten the left and right steering linkage outer tie rod nuts (1). Fastener Specifications

20. Front Lower Control Arm Brace (2) » Install [2x]

21. Front Lower Control Arm Bracket Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [4x] — Fastener Specifications

Note

The proper position of the underbody skid shield is between the underbody splash shield and the front frame.

22. Underbody Skid Shield (3) » Install

23. Underbody Splash Shield Bolt (2) » Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

26. Front Bumper Fascia Skid Plate Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [4x] — Fastener Specifications

27. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation

28. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.

29. Connect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

30. Measure and adjust the front toe. Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment
